In today’s world everyone wants you to master the Art. In fact many jobs demands you to have multiple certifications of different different technologies.

But spending lot of money on certifications and mastering one art, do you think it’s worth it ?

So this Blog is for people who are confused and who don’t have clear vision about certifications they’re worth it or not?

I am arguing “NO” and here is why.

IT Industry Moves Too Fast :

If you’re working in Industry whose fundamentals don’t change much, then a certification is a good way to test your knowledge and show off your skills.

But, IT Industry is totally different. Things changes very rapidly in IT. Lot of new technologies are coming in and replacing the old technologies. IT evolves very quickly and the knowledge which you have today, may become outdated tomorrow.

Suppose you have done certification in any particular version but companies roll out their softwares every one or two year. So the certificate that was important at that time may not be useful now.

“The evolution of technology makes many certificates Obsolete pretty quickly ( with some exception — some softwares likes LINUX KERNEL doesn’t change that rapidly ).

Certifications Is A Business & Who Are They :

Anyone can setup a certification business. Create few online tests and charge people for taking course online. Education sector in India and all over the world is Billion dollar business. All you need is little bit marketing to boost your Organisation and here you go, you can issue certificates.

But what can online tests really verify ?

Basically these online test either check your syntax knowledge or will tell you to enter some commands. Such things only test a small part of what people are really capable of doing it. For doing Automation, for setting up infrastructure requires lot of knowledge. I am damn sure lot of people aren’t aware of thousands of libraries. They rely on automation tools to get the work done. The don’t even use small fraction of them.

It Only Prove You Can Pass Test :

Certifications are basically online test and these tests check your theoretical knowledge. These are as good as people who create these tests. I have given many online tests and, despite being highly experienced in Unix domain, there is a set of online test that are so syntax oriented that I have never scored more than 35 percent on them.

Doing these certifications shows you a narrow segment of that particular domain, not that you can use it in a real life context.

Employers Really Don’t Care :

In most of the companies they just check your certifications to shortlist your profile apart from that nothing. But nowadays these trends are changing and companies are looking for people who have more knowledge than certificates. Because 90% people uses dumps to clear their exams or their so called institutes will clear exam for them. All they focus is on earning money, now knowledge has moved to secondary position and everyone is just promoting their shops.

My personal experience — and I don’t think I’m alone, by a long shot — is that employers just want someone who can do the job and fit in. Most don’t care if you have a certificate.

It’s Rip Off :

There’s a whole certification-related ecosystem that seems designed solely to extract money for training and certificates. They will give you so many deals to do the certifications from their institute. It’s one thing to choose to pay for training; it’s another to be forced to pay for it.

And if you’re forced to pay for it, it’s hard not to think that the certification’s whole purpose for existence is as a moneymaker.

Conclusion :

I am not a big fan of doing certifications. All I believe in having sound knowledge and adding more skills as per market. Because IT evolves very quickly and you should be able to adapt the new changes. I have seen lot of brilliant minds working in IT without these papers and having a perfectly fine career.

Don’t let the complicated world of certificates impede you from pursuing what you want.
